EOREA Launches to Address Challenges in Ocean Research and Education

In a landmark event on December 8th, the European Ocean Research and Education Alliance (EOREA) was officially launched, marking a significant step forward in the field of oceanic studies and academic collaboration across Europe. Comprising 14 prestigious research and education institutions from various corners of the continent, EOREA sets out on a mission to consolidate expertise and resources, aiming for enhanced ocean research and education. EOREA is committed to contributing to EU and UN priorities through participation in key initiatives such as Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters and EU Climate Law. 

The alliance’s distinctive feature lies in its thematic joint programs, fostering collaboration and alignment of ongoing national-level initiatives. The founding members of EOREA represent a diverse range of institutions, each bringing its unique strengths and perspectives to the alliance. Together, the members will seek to maximize the impact of ocean research by strategically sharing knowledge and resources. 

Current EOREA members are Aix-Marseille University (France), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norway), Aalto University (Finland), Technical University of Denmark (Denmark), Free University of Brussels (Belgium), Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Greece), Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), Italian National Science Council, University of Lisbon – CENTEC (Portugal), Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), Jožef Stefan Institute Ljubljana (Slovenia), National Institute for Marine Research and Development NIMRD (Romania), University of Southampton (UK), and Institut de Ciències del Mar – CSIC (Spain).
